Wicker furniture is rather delicate, since it is made from natural fibers which can easily get mildew and rot. The fibers are also susceptible to the effects of the sun and rain. Even if you keep the furniture indoors, the changes in temperature do affect the life of the fibers. Here is how you can revitalize wicker furniture with spray paint.
Clean the surface of the wicker using a vacuum cleaner. You should also use a toothbrush to clean any mildew that may have grown on the furniture. Dip the toothbrush into a solution of mild bleach which kills the mildew once and for all. Similarly, you can use a mildew killer that you can be purchased from your nearby hardware store or any home DIY retail outlet. After this treatment, you should wipe the furniture with a damp cloth, and then let the furniture dry in the sun.
If the wicker chair had been waxed or had some paint, then you should obtain some stripper from the hardware store, and using the spray paint gun, coat the furniture with it. Ask the clerk how much time you should allow the stripper to remain on wicker furniture.
Attention to Detail
After stripping the paint, allow the furniture to dry and then spray a layer of primer on it. Ensure that the primer covers all the strands properly. You should also ensure that the primer is sprayed on all surfaces, above and below. You should allow the primer to dry properly.
Mix the paint that you want, and then spray two coats of paint on the wicker furniture. Make sure that you spray it on all surfaces too. Ensure that the first coat of paint dries well before you add another one.
Adding a Coat of Lacquer
In order to protect the paint below, you should add a coat of lacquer. This can be done using the spray gun. Using the spray gun is advisable since it forces the lacquer to penetrate the small spaces between the interwoven strands of wicker.
Once the lacquer has dried, you can add a layer of wax to ensure that the surface of the wicker furniture is waterproof.
Moisture and Wicker Furniture do not Mix Well
After all the coats are dry, you can now use the wicker furniture to decorate your patio or sunroom. Remember that moisture is the greatest risk to wicker furniture. Wicker furniture that is exposed to moisture will collect mildew and this will cause the natural fibers to rot. Once they rot, then the strands begin to unravel thereby ruining the furniture.
