That extra depth changes the posture — and the experience. You sit back into the cushion rather than forward on the edge of it. Back cushions are thick enough to actually support a reclined position. The whole configuration invites staying, which is the point.

Cushion quality matters here more than in any other outdoor furniture category. Deep seating cushions are typically 4 to 6 inches thick, filled with high-density foam or foam-and-fiber combinations, and covered in Sunbrella fabric — solution-dyed against fade and warranted against mold, mildew, and UV damage.
