We’re here with the top trends of 2019 to give you a leg up on your neighbors and ensure you have the best patio in the neighborhood. Patio Productions is the place to go for all your patio furniture needs.

1. Lighting

So this doesn’t exactly fall under patio furniture, but we feel it’s a major part of any good patio. Having the right lighting for your patio can make a world of difference when you’re hosting friends and family or just relaxing on your patio alone. That’s why we believe that perfect lighting is an important part of our patio furniture design trends article.

It is easier than ever to find LED lights that can be easily controlled by your phone. Being able to change the color and intensity of LEDs around your patio means that you’ll quickly have the proper lighting for any occasion.

If you don’t want to mess around with installing lights in and around your patio, there are a couple of other easy solutions. Hanging string lights around your patio is a tried and true method of nailing the perfect vibe for your patio.

Many string lights are heavy duty and shatterproof, so they’ll last through any bad weather. Additionally, most string lights will come with a remote allowing you to dim or change the color of the lights. If you spend the money on lights, it’s best to get the ones that give you the most bang for your buck.

LED floor lamps are a great way to add some light to your patio and a pop of color. Some awesome options with fun, colorful bases will bring some life to your patio setup.

A final option for finding the perfect lighting setup for your patio is to try out patio umbrellas with built-in LED lights. These patio umbrellas offer protection from the sun during the day and then can light up your space at night. You’ll be able to kick it on the patio and see what you’re doing late into the night.

2. Mixed Materials

This is a trend that we started to see grow in popularity mixed material patio furniture will shine. You’ll see plenty of teak, wicker, cast iron, and aluminum patio furniture, and they all look great. What will make your outdoor living space stand out will be unique patio furniture pieces that utilize a mix of materials.

These patio furniture items will always be made of the best quality materials because it’s hard to get mixed materials just right. Some common examples you’ll see are wicker furniture with a cast aluminum frame, cast aluminum and cast iron with sling fabrics, teak, and aluminum, etc.

Why is this trend becoming more popular? Mixing materials is a way to find high-quality patio furniture items and also stand out from the crowd. Having the same boring beige all plastic patio furniture might be cheap, but it’s not cool, interesting, or all that fun. When you’re hosting on your patio, you want to impress and entertain. There are some great options that you can find in our collection.

3. Dual Purpose Furniture

Dual purpose furniture is becoming increasingly popular as a way to effectively deal with a lack of space. You’ll see dual purpose patio furniture utilized on balconies and smaller patios, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use them for a larger space.

A common way to use this kind of patio furniture is for storing cushions during lousy weather, but can also be utilized in many other space-saving capacities. You can even find some interesting DIY tutorials showing people turning furniture storage space into coolers!

Dual purpose furniture fits in with the general theme, simple and functional. Overly extravagant patio furniture pieces look amazing and can be a cool novelty, but you have to consider how often you’ll use it to its full potential. Dual-purpose options have a way of making you feel good as a buyer because you know you’re getting the most bang for your buck.

4. Mixing Indoor and Outdoor

Mixing indoor and outdoor furniture is a trend that started to develop in 2018 and will be a big part of the patio furniture design trend in the future. The idea of blurring the line between indoor and outdoor isn’t a totally new or foreign concept. In ancient Rome, many of middle and upper-class families had houses with indoor/outdoor courtyards and extensive gardens inside.

That might be an excessive example, but the point is that it is human nature to enjoy blending out indoors and outdoors. We have a great article about the best ways to use outdoor furniture indoors that’s worth a look for some quick design inspiration.

We’ve seen a drastic change from the old, flimsy, plastic patio furniture of the ‘80s to sleek, contemporary, and versatile patio furniture. Gone are the days of tacky flower printed patio cushions. If you look through current patio furniture, you’ll see all different kinds of designs, materials, and styles that will fit in with any outdoor living space.

This trend is most noticeable in the outdoor dining spaces. Patio kitchens and bars have skyrocketed in popularity, so choosing the right furniture for a seating area is going to become important.

There are a a few classic options you can go with when designing your “indoor/outdoor” space. Do you want a full dining set? A bistro set? Maybe you have a patio that’s big enough for both! The opportunities are endless.

5. Fire Pits

Fire pits are an excellent way to bring your patio to the next level. Maybe the thought of having a fire pit on your patio sounds a little intimidating. Luckily, there are plenty of options when it comes to patio fire pits. You can check out our ultimate fire pit buying guide, which has everything you need to know about fire pits.

One significant aspect of patio fire pits is that they act as a focal point for your patio. Having an interesting focal point makes your patio feel larger, and works as a gathering point for you and your guests. It can be a warm summer evening or a cold winter night, the patio fire pit makes it feel like it’s a good idea to be outside at any time of the year.

6. Colorful

Having a colorful patio is a big trend. Not only will adding color be popular but having unique pieces to show off will be a great way to spice up your patio. There are so many different ways to add color that you’re sure to find something that fits your space perfectly.

Utilizing recycled plastic patio furniture to add fun colors is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to jump on this trend. Recycled plastic furniture is great because not only is it sustainable, the colors don’t fade and there are many different options. Another easy way to add color is by adding fun throw pillows to your patio setup. If you don’t want to splurge on Sunbrella pillows, you can always buy some fun standard throw pillows that won’t last quite as long but won’t break the bank.

  1. Great tips! Most of all I like the idea of mixing different materials. However, I’m not sure about the cushions that are on the pictures. Teak, aluminium, cast iron and so on are OK, but the cushions can get wet if it rains. I either wouldn’t use them at all or would put some protective covers on them.

    1. Hey Emily, not to worry! Any cushions and throw pillows you’ll find in our store are covered with marine grade Sunbrella fabrics (the same canvas material used for seating and cushions on boats, so they’re made to handle sea water and rain). They’re totally fine getting a little wet. But we do also sell furniture covers, not so much for the cushions, but for the frames. Most of our frames are made from powder coated or cast aluminum so they don’t rust easily, but some people really like wrought iron furniture, and we strongly recommend covers for those sets.

      Thanks for the comment!
