Backyard Putting Greens: Where the Game Lives Between Rounds

Practice is the part of golf that most people skip — not because it's not useful, but because the driving range is a trip, the putting green at the course requires a whole day, and a mat in the garage doesn't simulate anything worth simulating. A synthetic putting green in the backyard removes every excuse. Part of our outdoor living collection, the artificial turf products we carry are engineered specifically for putting performance: consistent ball roll, realistic green speed, and surface durability that holds up through years of daily use and changing weather conditions.

There's a meaningful difference between decorative artificial turf and putting green turf. Decorative turf is designed to look like grass. Putting green turf is engineered for a specific stimp range and rolling surface — the pile height, fiber density, and base construction are calibrated so the ball breaks predictably and rolls true. A well-specified artificial putting green plays more consistently than most natural grass greens outside of professional or tournament facilities, which is the point.

Design, Installation, and Getting the Break Right

A flat putting green teaches one thing. A contoured putting green teaches what actually matters. Good backyard green installations include deliberate break — side hills, slight slopes, subtle humps and hollows that force you to read the line rather than just lag the ball forward. The synthetic surface holds any contour you build into the sub-base. The design phase is where most of the work happens: laying out the green footprint, planning the fringe, building in drainage and the proper subgrade, deciding where to put the cups and how many. The surface itself goes in relatively quickly once the groundwork is right.

Installation options range from DIY kits with pre-cut shapes and all necessary materials to fully custom work done by a landscape professional. Larger or heavily contoured greens tend to benefit from professional installation to get the drainage and base compaction right. For a simple flat or gently sloped green in the 200 to 400 square foot range, a confident DIY approach works well with quality turf and the right underlayment.
