You can't state that Sunbrella lasts 10 years. From what people report, it's "5 to 10 years". Depends on the climate and frequency of use/exposure. Warranty is another thing.

My swings are covered in Sunbrella fabric, and the awnings and seats are covered with mildew. How do I clean them?

May 31, 2017

Sunbrella offers detailed cleaning instructions on their website. For mildew, they recommend combining one fourth cup of dishwashing liquid and one cup of bleach per one gallon of water. Then follow these steps:

1. Brush off loose dirt.
2. Spray on cleaning solution.
3. Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
4. Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
5. Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
6. Air dry.

Sunbrella is durable enough to use bleach on. Even on colored fabrics.

May 15, 2019

I usually throw it in the washer with bleach and I put it in the dryer too. I don't know why they say air dry. I wonder if someone has a comment on that, over time, am I doing harm to the slipcovers?

My beautiful, expensive Sunbrella cushions developed water stains after the first heavy dew. (fabric was a taupe colour, Grade A). The problem was worst where two cushions touched (seat cushion and back cushion). The problem has lessened with time. I wonder if this was some kind of dye or surface treatment that eventually washed off? Being water-resistant was sort of the point to spending all this extra money Have you encountered this before?

July 2, 2017

Sounds like you had a case of mildew, which is common if you leave cushions out when it rains or when there is a lot of moisture in the air, such as a heavy dew. Pools of moisture left unattended are susceptible to mold and mildew, especially in the area you mentioned (between the cushions). Luckily Sunbrella fabrics can be washed in the washer and you can even use bleach on colored fabrics. To prevent this from happening, we would recommend bringing your cushions inside during times of heavy moisture, or using a cushion storage box. Sunbrella cushions can be left outside and the water is not going to damage them, but it is going to be an inconvenience when they get mildew.

What is the difference between 100% Terylene and sunbrella? Is it the same but Sunbrella is just a brand name?

March 10, 2018

Sunbrella is completely made from synthetic materials. From what I've been able to find, Terylene is a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. Sunbrella is not just a brand name. It is both the name of the fabric and the name of the company because Sunbrella is proprietary. Nobody else but Sunbrella makes Sunbrella fabric. Like Terylene, Sunbrella is also used on sailboats and is used on convertible tops as well. Sunbrella is a marine grade fabric designed for outdoor use.

was thinking of doing my indoor couch in sunbrella. is that a good ideal? will it be soft enough? thanks

June 16, 2018

Thank you for your comment. That is a very good question.

Many people already use Sunbrella fabrics for their indoor furniture, especially if they have pets and small children. Sunbrella is so durable and easy to clean that it takes a lot of stress out of taking care of furniture. Different Sunbrella fabrics have different qualities in terms of softness and texture. Our best advice would be to find a Sunbrella fabric sample book at a local outdoor furniture retailer and asking them if you can take a quick look at the book. This way you can feel the fabric for yourself.

We were thinking of buying a Sunbrella patio table and chairs cover. We have bought Duckcovers in the past which last about two years in Southern California, zip 92630. Duckcovers has been good in fulfilling their warranty (we have received several replacement covers under warranty) but the bottom line is, their product doesn't hold up against the elements. How does Sunbrella's warranty work?

June 21, 2018

Sunbrella is warrantied to last for a minimum of 5 years before showing any fading or discoloration. It will hold up better than most outdoor fabrics but there are reasons that furniture covers are made from a different material. You want the fabric to be well ventilated in order to prevent the growth of mold & mildew. That means the fabric should breath and Sunbrella isn't known for being a breathable fabric. In fact, it's known for the way liquid beads off the surface. There's also the fact that Sunbrella is fairly expensive.

July 3, 2018

I have Sunbrella covered cushions on chairs in my sunroom. My cat can scratch all over it and the fabric doesn't break or tear or show scratch marks -- unlike my upholstered living room sofa which have lots of scratches and tears. . I'm thinking of having my next sofa covered with Sunbrella if I can be sure it is resistant to cat scratching. Does Sunbrella have different types of fabrics that are more or less resistance to animal claws?

August 14, 2018

Sunbrella is expensive- no question, but its completely legit and worth every cent. I've had sunbrella boat covers and bimini tops and non sunbrella---and after about 2 yrs, the non sunbrella ones are useless and have to be tossed. The sunbrella ones are still bright and beautiful, and as strong and flexible as the day I bought it.

August 16, 2018

Thank you for your comment. Sunbrella is definitely a high quality material and stands apart from the rest in the industry.

I have a Pergulla with a removable Sunbrella shade cover. We've had this about 5 years. We remove the cover for heavy rain and during the winter. The size is 10' x 10' with snaps on two sides. I would like to know if the cover can be laundered in my washing machine?

September 10, 2018

Hey Lillie -
Yes, Sunbrella is machine washable! Cold water washing is best, ideally 100 degrees F or less. However, please be advised, you should NOT machine-dry your Sunbrella fabrics. Just let them hang dry.

May 15, 2019

Why not put in the clothes dryer please? I have been doing that and so far so good.

October 13, 2018

I looking to cover window seat that my dogs use and was hoping to buy the fabric would this be suitable
Kind regards

October 14, 2018

Hello Ann. Thank you for your comment. That is a very good question.

Sunbrella has become increasingly popular for use by pet owners because it is so durable and can be washed frequently without losing color or fading. The same properties that make Sunbrella a great outdoor fabric also help make it a great fabric for pet owners.

Sunbrella fabrics also come in a variety of textured colors and patterns that give furniture that indoor look and feel. Your furniture does not need to look like an outdoor furniture set with simple solid colors.

Another benefit of Sunbrella fabrics is that they won't fray the way other fabrics do when scratched or punctured. Great for cat owners.

I would like to remove my sunbrella slipcovers to clean them. The white top layer is disintegrating...can this be replaced? Any can the bleaching method for mildew be done in the washing machine with success?

February 18, 2020

I'm assuming you mean the inside pillow cover as that's the case with mine as well. Don't you find a solution?

June 10, 2019

Are all sunbrella fabrics of equal quality? Are they "graded"?

July 14, 2019

That is a very good question. Yes to both questions and here's why: The "grades" of sunbrella fabric retailers refer to has nothing to do with the quality of the fabric. It has to do with the cost. Different fabrics have different price ranges based on the manufacturing process and amount of material used. A fabric with complicated stitching patterns in multiple colors is going to cost more than a single color fabric with no patterns or stitching. Nevertheless, they all use the same Sunbrella material and offer the same level of warranty.

July 16, 2019

I have Sunbrella cushions for my wicker retan patio furniture. I keep reading that I should remove the covers from the cushion itself. I'm not sure how this is supposed to be done as mine don't have a zipper and I don't want to cut the stitching in the back of them especially since I just read that Sunbrella uses different thread for durability. I have also considered adding a zipper to all my cushions but I've also been told this is a difficult process as well.
Please Help,
Thank You, Jessica

July 20, 2019

Thank you for your comments, those are very common concerns when it comes to outdoor cushions. Most manufacturers nowadays make their cushions w/ a zipper so the skins can be removed and washed separately. However, some manufacturers still make cushions without a zipper and this can create problems when you are trying to wash/clean the cushion skin. We wouldn't recommend cutting the stitching on an outdoor cushion either, and adding a zipper to a cushion that wasn't designed to have one can negatively affect the shape of the cushion. In the future, make sure to keep an eye out for cushions with zippers that make removal and cleaning a simple process.

You can have window awnings for your residence.

I have a sectional that I had upholstered in Sunbrella material. I receive direct sun where my set is located. Two of the cushions and the top of the set have holes in them. Almost looks like they have been burned. Is sunbrella liable for this. Is it covered under the ten year warranty?

Thank you

August 3, 2019

Thank you for your comment. Have you tried contacting the retailer where you purchased your sectional? They should be able to file a claim on your behalf with the manufacturer and get the cushions replaced if it is a manufacturing defect or doesn't live up to the Sunbrella warranty.

August 2, 2019

Please help as I paid extra to have this set upholstered in Sunbrella

August 5, 2019

I just ordered a sunbrella indoor sofa, 3 seater. A friend has told me that her indoor chair, of 3 years, is pilling. This will drive me crazy if it happens. Is this a common occurrence? I am scared because it was expensive! Thanks

August 16, 2019

Thank you for your comment. That is a great question. The thicker, more heavily woven Sunbrella fabrics might have a chance of pilling. If you're concerned about that happening we recommend sticking with the simpler fabrics, such as the Canvas & Cast fabrics. These fabrics are thin and don't have any thick weaves or patterns that could cause the fabric to pill.

January 28, 2020

Hi,

Is there an specific collection fabric from Sunbrella that will take extreme sun heat? Or a fabric that will not get too hot at the time of laying on it?

Thank you!

February 8, 2020

Thank you for your comment. That is a very good question. As far as extreme sun heat is concerned, your best bet is fabrics that are 100% Sunbrella Acrylic. Different fabrics can be made with different combinations of materials which can also include non-acrylic materials such as PVC & polyester. If you want the best durability when it comes to exposure to the sun, 100% Sunbrella Acrylic is the way to go. When you are browsing the Sunbrella website and click on a specific fabric, the material information is shown on the left side under the fabric thumbnail & fabric code.
