How to Make Your Patio More Private

The patio should be an area of sanctuary where a homeowner can relax and escape from the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this is not always the case because residential homes tend to be built very close to one another. Neighbors can easily see into each other’s yards from second-story windows and listen to each other’s conversations. From easy to complex, there are many ways to add privacy to your patio. In this blog post, we take a look at how to make your patio more private.

Fencing

Fencing is a sure way to add privacy to your patio. On shared property lines, be sure to bring your neighbor into the decision-making process. Make sure you check with your homeowner’s association or local county offices to be sure there aren’t any regulations regarding fencing on your property. Some HOA’s only allow certain types of fencing and specify details such as maximum height. Consider using plants and shrubs around the fence to break up the monotony and add some texture along the fence line.

Plants and Bushes

Consider using tall plants and shrubs to create artificial walls for a more natural look. Bamboo is very useful in this regard because it can grow very tall very quickly. Consider using tall and oversized planters that can raise the height of your plants and add an artful design element to your yard. Planting different types of plants in a layered design creates a more natural-looking barrier. Keep in mind that using plants requires regular maintenance. It may be necessary to hire a gardener or at least invest in a hedge trimmer to keep the bushes looking clean.

Lattice Panels & Partitions

Lattice panels provide a warm and inviting look and are perfectly suited for outdoor spaces. They are great for patios because they create the feeling of an indoor space without completely blocking the sunlight and wind. They can be used with vines, such as ivy, which grow on lattice panels and create a natural-looking barrier. Single and multi-panel partitions are also very effective for outdoor privacy. They can be any size and made from various materials to match the colors and design of your patio.

Pergolas

Pergolas are useful for blocking the view from the neighbor’s second-story windows. The roof of a pergola is designed to allow sunlight through while still providing shade. This design is useful for blocking a neighbor’s line of sight from their home to your patio. For even more privacy, consider using curtains with a pergola that can be unfolded to create a canopy effect.

Fountains For Creating White Noise

Sometimes it’s not so much about keeping your neighbor’s eyes from prying but their ears as well. The sound of running water is a great way of adding white noise to a patio. This makes listening in on private conversations much more difficult. A fountain is also great for drowning out the noise from the neighbors. If a fountain is too much, consider using outdoor speakers to play the noises of nature, such as running water, wind, birds, oceans, etc.

For people with a green thumb, a vertical garden is a great way to add privacy and show off those gardening skills. Vertical gardens take many shapes and sizes and can be made from various plant types. It’s important to note which plants will require training and which will grow vertically naturally.

Create an Area of Seclusion

Perhaps it is too difficult or unappealing to make the entire yard private. In this case a small secluded space is a much more viable option. Using the methods mentioned above, such as partitions, tall plants, and curtains, you can create a small private getaway to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
