Small balconies typically have just enough space for a modest seating arrangement, a coffee table, and a barbecue grill. Unfortunately this means that you probably won’t be able to plan out the outdoor kitchen of your dreams, but you can still furnish your balcony to entertain and enjoy! I’m going to show you how and give you a few tips to keep in mind!

Before we get started, let’s make sure that we address our small terrace dilemma with the right approach. First of all, make sure you get accurate measurements! There’s nothing like guesstimating the dimensions of your balcony only to find out that the furniture you purchased is too big for your small space. Instead of measuring the amount of space you “think” you have by extending your hands apart and saying “it’s about this big,” pull out the measuring tape to figure out just how much space you can dedicate to furniture without cramping your style.
Plan out your layout on paper. Draw up a sketch so that you can visualize your small patio. Here are some questions to ask yourself when drawing up a sketch:
- Is there elbow room between seating?
- Can you still open and close doors without having to move all of your furniture out of the way?
- Do you have enough space between the fire pit/grill to make sure that your balcony doesn’t become a fire hazard?
Small Patio Furniture Ideas
One of the first things that we think of when we look at our small balcony is, “What am I supposed to do with this?” Instead of posing this question, why not rephrase your dilemma by saying “What CAN I do with this!” Why not turn your small patio into a upscale outdoor dining venue! One of the best parts of eating at a luxury restaurant includes the option of dining outside. This comes with its own romantic ambiance that is impossible to replicate indoors. Think about it. Dinner for two with a candlelight dinner? Now the ideas should be flowing.
Small balcony’s are the perfect size to create an intimate setting that keeps the conversation going in your own private nook. This is one of the benefits of having access to a small space. It’s the perfect way to turn something small into something great. Bistro sets are dining sets that are specifically made for small spaces. You can browse for some cute ideas by clicking here.
Chat sets are typically composed of 2 chairs and a small side table meant to accommodate drinks, a plate, or other delicate items. Often times the balcony of your condo is a place to step outside and chat with a friend. Chat sets allow you to do so in fashion. Rather than place bulky chairs that will take up most of your space, you can opt for a petite chat set that will make your small balcony functional. Chat sets come in all shapes, styles, colors, and designs.
Choosing furniture that stores away easily is imperative when working within limited dimension. Nesting furniture is a new design feature that turns your outdoor furnishing into origami. Let me explain. The idea behind this concept is to help maximize space by designing furniture that will fold and stack into interlocking pieces. This makes storage ideal. Below are just a few examples of what you can find.
Bring Your Small Patio Balcony to Life with a Garden
Obviously, furniture alone won’t transform your apartment balcony into that prized relaxation oasis of your dreams. To really complete the look and feel of your terrace, consider adding some greenery to the space. Plants and flowers make wonderful additions to the area, and just a little bit can go a long way. Obviously your balcony won’t support a large collection of pots and plants, but if space is truly at a premium, consider a DIY vertical garden that features “shelves” of plants. This can occupy an entire wall without intruding too much into the seating area, and can have a tremendous impact on the coziness of the outdoor space. Get creative with it: you can use an old pallet, hanging shoe storage, or even mason jars mounted to wood boards to elevate your gardening! Some great ideas are collected here.
Try to avoid over furnishing your balcony. Your goal is to furnish your terrace with just enough to make it comfortable and functional without becoming cramped. Maximize space by using every inch to your advantage.
Think of what types of activities are ideal for small spaces. Instead of trying to place a square peg in a triangular hole, go with what works naturally! A word from the wise, it’s best to use lightweight aluminum patio furniture because it is very easy to move. This will make it possible to move your furniture when need be whether for rearrangement or cleaning.
