Whether you’re planning a backyard party, a family get together, or a romantic dinner outside, having the right lighting can increase the natural ambiance and set the tone for your night. For those of you who are struggling with ideas, I’ve put together a creative list to help you with your outdoor lighting woes.
Creating a well-lit backyard is important for several reasons. You need to be able to see the faces that you’re interacting with to improve the dynamics of your outdoor area. That simple filament bulb is not going to cut it for your entire backyard. Here’s what you can do!
1. Patio Sconce
A sconce is a type of lighting fixture that is attached to the wall. These can be a great way to provide lighting around corners, along walkways, and just outside of your sliding door. The sconce has been around since the beginning of time. You can find an unlimited variety of decorations to follow the motif of your patio layout. Attach a dimmer switch to your sconce to increase the control you have over your outdoor setting!
2. String Lights
Hanging a string of lights can be a great way to ensure that the entire patio is well-lit. String lighting allows you to evenly distribute light throughout your backyard space. You can hang them in a pattern or keep the alignment simple and orderly.
3. Landscape Rope Lighting
This landscape rope lighting idea is a creative way to have some fun with your backyard. Your kids won’t be able to wait until the sun goes down! 4. Fire Pit
When you think of outdoor lighting, a fire pit doesn’t necessarily come to mind but it should. An outdoor fire pit can take care of a few birds with a single stone; lighting, heating, and mood. Fire pits create an alluring gathering point that is warm and toasty. The dancing flames provide more than enough light to keep you out of the dark! Find the right fire pit for your backyard today!
5. Wine Bottle Lighting
This is a cute idea for those who love to repurpose old items. There’s something about wine that makes us associate these late night glasses with the lifestyle of the rich and eccentric. 6. Recessed Lighting
Similar to the way that they are used inside the home, recessed lighting provides a very modern and sleek lighting system. By having the lights recessed, they are out of plain sight, creating a more natural arena. Recessed lighting works great under gazebos, pergolas, or pavilions.
7. Pendant Lighting
Pendant lights are suspended in air, usually affixed to a the ceiling. They can be attached using a variety of materials including interlinking chains or a more subtle ropes. Pendants hold a natural charm and can provide ample outdoor lighting without intruding upon the space of visitors.
8. LED Staircase Patio Lighting
LED lighting is ideal for outdoor spaces because of its proven efficiency. As one can imagine, lighting an area as large as the backyard can cause your energy bills to sky-rocket. For this reason, using solar power and LED lighting are great outdoor lighting ideas. LED lighting is very bright and can be installed along the sides of a stairway or within the actual stairs where they are hidden from plain view.
