Outdoor Deep Seating
Deep seating is the category name, but what it really describes is furniture you don't perch on. Seat depths of 22 to 26 inches or more, cushions measured in inches rather than fractions, back angles designed for a reclined posture rather than an upright one — these are pieces built for outdoor living, not just outdoor sitting. Within our broader outdoor furniture collection, deep seating is the heart of what a luxury patio looks like: the lounge arrangement that makes a backyard feel like a designed space rather than a collection of chairs near a door.
What Makes It Deep Seating
The distinction from dining or casual seating is dimensional. A standard dining chair has a seat depth of 16 to 18 inches; a deep seating chair or sofa runs 24 to 28 inches. That extra depth changes the posture — and the experience. You sit back into the cushion rather than forward on the edge of it. Back cushions are thick enough to actually support a reclined position. The whole configuration invites staying, which is the point.
Cushion quality matters here more than in any other outdoor furniture category. Deep seating cushions are typically 4 to 6 inches thick, filled with high-density foam or foam-and-fiber combinations, and covered in Sunbrella fabric — solution-dyed against fade and warranted against mold, mildew, and UV damage. The 200+ fabric options available across our brands mean the color and texture of the cushioning can be chosen as deliberately as the frame finish.
The Deep Seating Range
The core of a deep seating arrangement is built around outdoor sofas and outdoor club chairs — two and three-seat sofas anchor the arrangement, with club chairs flanking or facing to complete the lounge group. Sectionals and loveseats extend from there for larger spaces or more flexible configurations.
Adjacent to core deep seating are two lounging categories that round out an outdoor room: outdoor daybeds for single-occupant horizontal lounging, and chaise lounges for adjustable reclined positions typically near a pool or open sun exposure. Both complement deep seating arrangements and are covered by the same brands and material standards.
Deep seating is available across all the major outdoor furniture materials we carry: aluminum (cast and extruded), all-weather wicker, teak, synthetic rope, and poly lumber composite. Brands like OW Lee, Castelle, and Ebel bring cast aluminum deep seating with traditional design credentials; Ratana, Sunset West, and Jensen Outdoor build extruded aluminum and wicker collections with clean contemporary profiles; Harmonia covers teak and aluminum; POLYWOOD brings deep seating in recycled poly lumber that stays outside year-round without any maintenance. Most collections are backed by a 15-year frame warranty.
Patio Productions is ICFA-certified and has been helping customers build outdoor rooms — not just buy outdoor furniture — from our San Diego showroom and nationally online since 2007. Comparing two collections at different price tiers, or trying to figure out how to configure seating for an irregular space? That's the kind of question our team is here for.
