It’s not easy being a landscape architect. Outdoor design is the first thing people see upon arrival to your home or business and the job falls solely on the shoulders of the architect to make it perfect. From the placement of the trees to the slope of the ground, the designer has a lot to plan. If it sounds a little overwhelming, stop worrying, we have the perfect place to start. Here are our recommendations for excellent resources for landscape architects.

American Society of Landscape Architects
The best place to start in any new field is the official society page. Scan through their education section and get an idea for basic practices before taking a shovel to the lawn. If you do decide to hire a professional, check out the directory here. They have a ton of members and a bunch of great contacts.

The American Society of Landscape Architecture was founded in 1889 as an organization that promotes excellence in landscape architecture. Today, ASLA offers education programs, awards, publications, and more. They also offer a free membership to access their library and other resources. Their website includes information about how to become a member and what they do.

Houzz
This might be one of the coolest sites on the web for anything in the home/outdoor remodeling world. The site is very visual and does a great job curating content to get the wheels churning. If you sign up for an account, you can actually save your photos to an “idea board” to collect all your visuals in one place.

Landscape Architect Business

Landscape Architect Business (LAB Magazine) is an up-and-coming site and digital magazine in the landscape sector. They are a great resource if you are a designer or looking for information on projects. It will be exciting to see these guys grow.

Landscape Architecture Books

The best way to learn about landscape architecture is by reading books written by professionals in the field. Many excellent books out there will teach you everything from planting a tree to building an outdoor kitchen. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular books on the subject.

Author: Michael Ellis is a freelance writer for Patio Productions. When he is not writing, he can be found camping with his dog or mountain biking.
